Sunglasses in Mauritius — Polarised, Prescription & Designer Brands
The UV index in Mauritius peaks around 16 in summer — among the highest in the world — which makes sunglasses less a fashion accessory than everyday protective equipment. At D.Sungkur in Quatre-Bornes we carry sun collections from more than 12 international brands, every pair checked for genuine UV400 protection and adjusted to your face before you leave. The Ray-Ban collection can also be ordered online and collected in boutique.
- Try-on across the full sun collection — walk-in welcome, no appointment needed
- Genuine UV400 protection on the sun lenses we sell — verified, not assumed
- Polarised options across the range, including the Polaroid and INVU specialist lines
- Prescription sun lenses made to your correction — single-vision or progressive
- Frame adjustment to your face before collection, and after-sale re-adjustments
- Repairs where possible — nose pads, screws, realignment — even for pairs bought elsewhere
The sun collection — more than 12 brands
The icons
Ray-Ban — Aviator, Wayfarer, Clubmaster and the modern lines, in classic and polarised versions. The most requested sun brand in the boutique, and the one you can order online for collection in Quatre-Bornes.
Polarised specialists
Polaroid — the brand that invented the polarising lens — and INVU by Swiss Eyewear Group, whose collections are built around polarised optics. The strongest glare-cutting value in the range, ideal for driving and the beach.
Luxury & fashion
Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Michael Kors, Emporio Armani. Statement sunwear with the same UV protection standards — because luxury frames still have to earn their place under this sun.
Everyday & value
Vogue Eyewear, Guess, Hugo Boss, Fossil, Levi's. Real brand quality at accessible price points — a solid first pair, a spare for the car, or a gift.

The other brands are in boutique — collections rotate seasonally, so if you're after a specific model, message us on WhatsApp and we'll confirm availability or reserve it for you.
Polarised vs UV400 — protection and comfort are two different things
UV400 is protection. It means the lens blocks ultraviolet light up to 400 nanometres — essentially 100% of UVA and UVB. This is the non-negotiable part: cumulative UV exposure is linked to cataract, pterygium and macular damage. Every sun lens we sell meets it.
Polarisation is comfort. A polarising filter cuts the horizontal reflected glare that bounces off roads, water and sand — the harsh shimmer that makes you squint even behind dark lenses. The difference is immediate when driving towards the sun, fishing, or spending the day at Flic-en-Flac. Polarised lenses are available with or without prescription, in various tints.
One thing polarisation does not add: more UV protection. A cheap polarised lens without a UV filter is still a bad lens. And a very dark tint without UV400 is worse than no sunglasses at all — the dark lens dilates your pupil and lets more UV reach the retina. That's why we verify the filter, not the marketing.
Prescription sunglasses — your correction, in the sun
Most sun frames in the collection accept prescription lenses. We surface sun lenses to your exact correction — single-vision or progressive, tinted or polarised — so you keep sharp vision at the wheel and on the beach without swapping between two pairs. If you'd rather have one pair for everything, photochromic lenses (clear indoors, darkening in sunlight) are the alternative worth discussing at the fitting.
Bring a recent prescription and we'll take it from there — frame choice, measurements, lens order and final adjustment, the same process as our frames & lenses fitting. No current prescription? Book an eye exam (from Rs 600) and we'll do both in the same visit.
Choose the frame
Try the sun collection in boutique. We'll tell you straight away which frames suit prescription sun lenses and which tints work for your use — driving, sport, beach, everyday.
Measurements & lens order
Pupillary distance and, for progressives, fitting height — then your sun lenses are surfaced to your prescription. Around 1 week for stock lenses, 2–3 weeks for custom or progressive lenses.
Fitting & adjustment
Collection in boutique with a final adjustment to your face — temples, nose pads, tilt. Minor re-adjustments afterwards are always free.
Under the Mauritian sun, this is eye care
Mauritius sits in one of the highest-UV regions on earth: the index peaks around 16 in summer and stays high year-round, and reflection off the lagoon and pale sand adds a second dose from below. UV damage to the eye is cumulative and painless — you don't feel it happening. Children's eyes let more UV through than adults', which makes early sun protection one of the simplest long-term investments in their vision.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy sunglasses without a prescription?
Yes. Non-prescription sunglasses are a walk-in purchase — no appointment needed. Come in during opening hours, try on the collection and leave with your pair the same day. The Ray-Ban collection can also be ordered online and collected in boutique.
Can sunglasses be made to my prescription?
Yes. Most sunglass frames in our collection accept prescription sun lenses — single-vision or progressive, tinted or polarised. Bring a recent prescription, or book an eye exam (from Rs 600) and we'll do both on the same visit.
What is the difference between polarised and UV400?
UV400 is protection: it blocks ultraviolet light up to 400 nanometres — essentially 100% of UVA and UVB. Polarisation is comfort: a filter that cuts reflected glare from roads, water and sand. A good pair in Mauritius should always be UV400; polarisation is a worthwhile upgrade if you drive, fish or spend time at the beach.
Which sunglasses brands do you carry?
More than 12 international brands: Ray-Ban, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Emporio Armani, Jimmy Choo, Michael Kors, Hugo Boss, Guess, Vogue Eyewear, Polaroid, Fossil, Levi's and INVU. Polaroid and INVU specialise in polarised lenses; the full collection is in boutique.
Can I order sunglasses online?
The Ray-Ban collection is available to order online at shop.dsungkur.com with collection in boutique (click & collect). Other brands are available in boutique in Quatre-Bornes — message us on WhatsApp to check a model or reserve a pair.
Are cheap sunglasses bad for your eyes?
They can be worse than wearing nothing. A dark tint without a real UV filter makes your pupil dilate behind the lens, letting more ultraviolet light reach the retina. Under a UV index that peaks around 16 in the Mauritian summer, verified UV400 lenses matter more than the tint.
Can I pay for sunglasses with my insurance (cashless)?
No — cashless insurance does not apply to sunglasses at D.Sungkur. Sunglasses are a direct purchase. If you'd like to spread the payment, CIM Finance instalments are available in boutique, with no minimum purchase amount.
